A productive Christian mom stewards her time well. She isn’t productive for the sake of the world or selfish ambition. A productive Christian mom loves the Lord through serving others faithfully and intentionally.

Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, I worked in Project Management for nearly a decade. I excelled at managing timelines, budgets, and achieving goals and serving teammates and clients was my specialty. Now I have the privilege of utilizing these God-given talents and gifts in my own home as I raise my three very young children and manage our household. I share all the tips and tricks I have with you, so that you may also live a biblically productive life.

A mother who stewards her time well understands the definition of biblical productivity and puts it into practice through her daily routines. Let’s walk through these 5 steps, so you can become a productive mama whose “why” is rooted in serving others and glorifying the Lord.

1. A productive Christian mom is biblically productive, not worldly productive.

I dive much deeper into the definition of being biblically productive in this post, but ultimately a biblically productive Christian mom is stewarding her time well in order to glorify God and serve others. Ultimately, she is not following the world’s definition of productivity and striving to produce as much as possible, but working diligently with a servant’s heart.

Biblical productivity is the act of intentionally and wholeheartedly producing good works that honor God and love our neighbors, without selfish ambition.

2. Her standards are set by the Lord, not by worldly influences.

I truly believe there is not a “one size fits all” prescription for productivity, especially for moms. It depends on how many children you have. Do you children have special needs? Are there any special needs or health considerations? Do you homeschool? Is help available to you? Does your husband work long hours or does he work from home?

Comparison is rarely a good thing. Typically, it often steals our joy by creating feelings of unworthiness or it fuels our ego and pride. When aiming for biblically productivity, we need to be in step with the Holy Spirit. This should be our guide.

First, determine your priorities for each day by prayerfully considering how you can love the Lord and those around you through your actions. Let’s not base our priorities on keeping up Sally Sue. Just because Sally Sue appears to lead bible study, homeschool her 6 kids, write books, and serve in church every week without a hitch does not mean that you need to do all or any of those things to be productive.

3. A productive Christian mom audits how her time is regularly spent and makes needed changes.

Audit how you’re currently spending your time. Maybe you are already productive and putting too much pressure on yourself and would actually be more productive if you did less. Or perhaps, you’re not getting much done at all and need to be a better steward of your time in order to serve others better. Or you simply just need help putting better systems in place so you can use your time wisely. You won’t know until you analyze how you’re currently spending your time.

Keep a simple log of how you’re spending your time for a week. Consider the following:

How are you feeling each day?

Are you anxious? Tired? Overwhelmed? Irritable? Bored? Discontent? Jot those feelings down.

How often are you encountering distractions?

We are all prone to distractions. Distractions could be too much screen time or scrolling or even anxious thoughts that keep us from focusing on what matters most.

What is the current culture of your family and home?

As mamas, it is our privilege and duty to manage our homes well. Does everyone’s needs seem to be met? Is the house mostly kept up?

How do you typically spend each part of the day?

Take note of where your efforts are spent in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

How can you create a better tomorrow based on what you’ve learned?

Take everything you’ve reviewed and identify ways you can improve your time management. You can start small. For example, deleting a social media app is a simple, but majorly impactful, step that helps many mamas steward their time wisely.

4. She intentionally plans the week ahead.

I personally use a time blocking method when I plan out my week. It’s something I have been doing for years, even when I worked my Project Management job. I go into a deep dive in this post that helps you create a simple SAHM schedule.

Essentially you want to create time blocks throughout your day that have a key focus. This is not meant to be a hard and fast “schedule” but a rhythm that you can repeat again and again. I’ll show you an example below:

  • Early AM routine: Personal time with the Lord and work time before the children wake up
  • Morning routine: Focus is solely on the children and home
  • Midday routine: Nap/Quiet time for the children, work time for me
  • Afternoon routine: Focus is solely on the children and home
  • Night time routine focus: putting the house to bed while spending quality time as a family and winding down for rest

I take time every weekend, usually Sunday, and create a plan for the week ahead in my planner.

5. Productive Christian moms pray and rest like Jesus.

Although Jesus accomplished a lot while on Earth, but He still made the time to rest and pray to our Heavenly Father. We must follow his example. If even the Son of God needed to pray and rest, how much more do we need to do the same?

When you plan out your week, do not cram it so full that there is no time for rest or prayer. A productive Christian mom is carving out moments of intentionally seeking the Father and she is resting properly. She does not stay up late scrolling for hours (I’ve been there, so no shame!). She cares for her temple and goes to bed knowing that good rest is what will allow her to turn tomorrow into another day of loving the Lord and serving the sweet souls around her that have been entrusted to her care.

Words of Encouragement

Please walk away from this post feeling empowered to steward your time better. I don’t want you to leave this feeling guilty or shameful. Conviction is not a bad thing, but let’s have that guide us into loving the Lord and others well. This content was created because I wanted to become more biblically productive myself and I wanted to encourage you to do the same.

The world’s definition of productivity has often left me feeling empty and anxious. Walking in God’s way of productivity has renewed my mind and encouraged me to live for Him. Praying He gives you clarity on how you can better use your time to serve others. I know He’ll come through. He always does.
